Fuel Surcharge

Fuel is the largest direct expense of the charter, and its cost affects the operations in multiple ways beyond the direct purchase of it.  The direct purchase of fuel for the charter boat is a weekly occurrence.    It is not news that oil prices have been volatile for the past 25 years, but current events have created a need to apply a fuel surcharge.

Charter prices are kept at a reasonable level with the aim to provide value and dive opportunities.   These prices are put in place far ahead of the season to help facilitate planning.

In lieu of changing the base price, a fuel surcharge may be applied to your charter.   This will be adjusted to an amount that allows the charter to maintain its operations and service level.

Fuel surcharges are reviewed regularly and adjusted accordingly.  Fuel surcharges will vary depending on Port of origin.  Fuel surcharges will be communicated to the divers before departure.

 FAQ

What does the cost of the charter cover?

The cost of the dive charter covers the charter fee. It does not include any rental equipment or a divemaster.

What is the average water temperature for the dives?

Water temperature can vary throughout the summer. In the early part of the season, the water temperature on the wrecks can range from 38-50. As the summer progresses, the water temperature on the wrecks can range from 40-60.

What is the recommended exposure protection to wear for diving in the Great Lakes?

It is recommended to wear a dry suit with hood and gloves for Great Lakes dives. If you do not own a dry suit, or are not dry suit certified, we would recommend that you wait until August to dive. Even at this time of the year you will need to wear at a minimum a 5mm wetsuit with hood and gloves.

What do I need to bring with me when I come to dive?

You will need to bring your mask, fins, boots, snorkel, BC, regulator, dry suit/wetsuit, hood, gloves, 2 tanks and weights with you. The charter fee does not include any rental equipment.  Mask, fins and boots are not available for rental.

What if I don’t own my own tanks and weights?

There are tanks and weights available for rent. You can either rent them ahead of time through Motor City Scuba, or the day of your charter at Four Fathoms.

What if I don’t own my own dive gear?

There is limited rental cylinders available through Four Fathoms.  If you want to rent gear from Motor City Scuba - it is advised that you contact them in advance to arrange for rental and gear pickup.  The availability of rental equipment can be limited.

Why are there two different prices listed?

The two prices depend on whether you are participating in a sport charter (2 dives with no overhead restrictions) or a technical charter (1 dive, appropriate technical certification required).

What certifications do I need to have?

Every diver needs to have the SDI Advanced Adventure (or equivalent certifcation). It is also recommended that you have experience diving in cold water (40-60). There are also wrecks that will require a deep cert or more advanced cert depending on which locations are visited. If you are signing up for the technical charters, you will need to show proper certifications for those dives prior to your charter.

What is the charter refund policy?

We cannot guarantee the clarity or the water or the calmness of the Great Lakes, therefore, we cannot guarantee our ability to get to a particular dive site (shipwreck). The safety of our passengers/divers is always the foremost consideration.
